AmeriCorps

AmeriCorps, the domestic Peace Corps, provides more than 75,000 opportunities through more than 600 programs in intensive, results driven service each year. Through partnerships with nonprofit organizations, AmeriCorps*Texas members served more than 1.5 million hours in the last program year. At Casa de Amigos the AmeriCorps tradition has continued to expand. Casa de Amigos' relationship with AmeriCorps began in 1994, with one member. Since that time, many members of AmeriCorps have contributed to Casa de Amigos' mission to "improve the quality of life throughout the community by helping people help themselves" and to the AmeriCorps' mission of "getting things done."

The 2009AmeriCorps STARS (Student Tutoring Assessment Readiness Success) project at Casa de Amigos tutors mostly elementary age children on a one-to-one basis in reading. Each member is assigned students who are tutored three times a week for 30 minutes per session.
